Endodontics

ΟΔΟΝΤΙΚΟΣ ΠΟΛΦΟΣENDODONTICS

Endodontics-inside (endo) the tooth (dontia). The specialty of endodontics is devoted to the biology, physiology, pathology and treatment of the dental pulp.

WHAT IS THE DENTAL PULP?

The pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. It functions in the development of the tooth (the crown and roots) and it continues to provide nourishment, and sensory response throughout life. It lies within the tooth and extends from within the crown of the tooth (that portion of the tooth that is visible) to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PULP GETS INJURED?

When the pulp is diseased or injured and can’t repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let germs (bacteria) enter the pulp. Germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a “pus-pocket” called an abscess. An abscess can cause damage to the bone around the teeth.

WHY DOES THE PULP NEED TO BE REMOVED?

When the infected pulp, which is made up of blood vessels and nerves, is not removed, pain and/or swelling can result. Some elements of the infection can injure your jaw bones and the resulting bacteria may enter your bloodstream. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed. In severe cases, you might need to be hospitalized due to an infection throughout your body.

WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT AND WHY DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVES?

IMG 7897uiuiuRoot canal treatment is the removal of the nerve and blood vessels of a tooth for the purpose of trying to save the tooth from extraction. A simple analogy is removing the wick from a candle. The void where the wick was is cleaned and smoothed and then we place a rubber type material into the cleaned out space to seal the canal (guttapercha).Treatment often involves from one to three visits

Emphasis is placed on the elimination of the microbial agent through the chemical
and mechanical cleaning of root canals, which is carried out with care, patience and persistence, and naturally with the use of an elastic isolator which facilitates the doctor’s task and contributes to the assurance of a sterile filed of work.

With the use of motorized root canal enlargement instruments (profile, protaper), modern imaging techniques (digital radioscopy), visual inspection (magnifying glasses/ loupes in combination with external light source), electronic apex locator, thermoplastic obturation techniques (system B, Obtura), we are able to maintain the tooth at place for a long time period.

We aim at the perfect longitudinal and transverse filling of root canals and the perfect seal of the apex.

SURGERY ENDODONTICS

Our work extends to surgery endodontics which frequently comes to complete the results of conservative endodontic therapy aiming at full restoration of the periapical area health.

More specifically, the following are carried out:

  1. Splitting and drainage of bone abcess
  2. Perforation repair
  3. Periapical surgery (cleaning of periapical area, apex extraction and and reverse filling with MTA)
